Kate Weare creates dances that seek to merge the mind and the gut through the power and persuasiveness of the moving body. With both rawness and precision, she maps a humanism that is contemporary, disquieting and profoundly stirring. Brought up by a painter and a printmaker in Oakland, California, Kate draws on visual art sources in her work, as well as a fascination with the fields of language, poetry, contemporary music and psychology.
Weare received her bachelor’s of arts from California Institute of the Arts and danced in Los Angeles, San Francisco, London, Belgrade and Montreal before settling in New York City. She founded Kate Weare Company in 2005 and has steadily gained recognition for her uncompromising, articulate choreographic vision.
Weare is a 2014 Guggenheim Fellow, 2011 Mellon Foundation Awardee, and 2009 Princess Grace Award-Winner for Choreography. She has been awarded artistic residencies at Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM), The Joyce Theater, Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival, CalArts, Bates Dance Festival, Djerassi and Dance New Amsterdam (DNA), and many institutions have also commissioned new work, including BAM, The Joyce, Jacob’s Pillow, Danspace Project, Bates, Dance Theater Workshop and DNA. Dance companies worldwide have asked Kate to travel and set work on their dancers. She has also shared her choreographic vision through faculty positions such as Guest Artist at Princeton, and in teaching residencies at Juilliard, NYU/Tisch, Virginia Commonwealth University, Keene State University, and Marymount Manhattan, among other educational institutions.
Her most recent work, Dark Lark, was presented to critical acclaim by Brooklyn Academy of Music’s Next Wave Festival in 2013. Weare was chosen as the inaugural artist for BAM Fisher’s Artist-in-Residence Program and enjoyed a five-week creative development residency to focus on Dark Lark under their roof and in the theater it would be performed in. Her next work Unstruck Sound began development in the inaugural Evelyn Sharp CalArts Summer Residency in May 2014 and will premiere at BAM in February 2015. Kate Weare Company is celebrating its 10th Anniversary Season.
